Privacy Policy

Scórtol generates hiking routes. We keep data collection to the minimum needed to provide that service, and we don't run ad tracking or sell data. This page explains what leaves your browser and where it goes.
Location (geolocation)
If you allow location access, your coordinates are used only inside your browser to center the map near you. They are never sent to our servers, not stored, and not shared with anyone. You can decline the browser prompt; the map then defaults to a fixed view and everything else still works.
Place search
When you search for a place by name, the text you type is sent to our server, which forwards it to a geocoding provider to find matching locations. Today that provider is OpenStreetMap Nominatim; we plan to move to a geocoder we host ourselves. We cache results to reduce repeat lookups. Search queries are not tied to your identity or stored as a personal profile.
Route generation & GPX
To build a route we send your chosen start point and parameters (distance, ascent, preferences) to our server. These are used to compute and return routes and are not linked to your identity. Generated routes may be held briefly in a short-lived cache to serve GPX downloads.
Sharing a route
When you use “Share”, the route's data (its geometry and stats) is stored on our server so the share link can display it. Share links expire automatically after about 30 days, after which the stored data is no longer served.
Map tiles
Map imagery is served by MapTiler. As you pan and zoom, your browser requests the map tiles for the area you are viewing, which reveals that approximate area to the tile provider. Their privacy policy governs that data.
Analytics
We use Plausible Analytics, a privacy-friendly tool that uses no cookies and collects no personal data — only aggregate usage (page views, country, referrer). It cannot identify individual users.
